Dept. of Traditional Arts and Crafts

Educational objectives

The traditional clothing and textile major teaches traditional textile crafts in general including dyeing, embroidery, and maedeup knotting, focusing on traditional Korean fabrics and clothing. The goal is to equip students with both the theories and practical skills they will need at a professional level in the tangible and intangible heritage of traditional textile art. This is the mission of the university, and courses are designed to explore traditional textile culture in its original form and enable students to engage in creative succession and development. The curriculum features textile theories for analysis of textile artifacts and use of those theories to better understand traditional materials; apprenticeship training with National Intangible Cultural Heritage Holders and other artisans; weaving and pattern design of traditional fabrics; understanding of period-specific clothing based on the history of Korean clothing; reproduction of such clothing with needlework techniques ascertained through historical research; and education related to the inheritance of traditional textiles including traditional dyeing, embroidery, quilting, and knotting. Through acquiring knowledge on the different uses of traditional textiles, pattern designs, and such, students will also develop the ability to re-create traditional fabrics and costumes with a modern sense of beauty. Students will then be able to embark on their careers as experts of traditional fabrics and clothing in both theory and practice, traditional Korean clothing designers, traditional textile artists, or professionals working at related organizations, museums, art galleries, and culture markets. Through exchange with such entities as the China National Silk Museum, an international research institute in Hangzhou, China, and the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED), a renowned design school in Italy, talented individuals will become well versed in Korean traditions and gain an international perspective and the competitiveness to lead the textile industry in the future.
